Outline

Module Goal

  • To select and analyse appropriate examples of technical and technological innovations in the built environment which might inform the development of an architectural idea.

Module Content

  • Technologies which influence structural stability, environmental control and constructional techniques and materials;
  • The influence of each on the perceived architectural environment, and;
  • The impact of technological choices on the economics and environmental impact of a design proposal.

Practicalities

Lecture Schedule: 

  • 12 x 3 hr(s) lectures
  • 89 (hrs) online asynchronous (any time learning) activities
  • Delivery: Wednesdays 10:00 - 13:00 

Continuous Assessment - 100 marks

  • Students participate in seminars and produce seminar paper and technical dossier (100 marks)

Why Choose

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Identify and analyse appropriate technical and technological frameworks within the area of contemporary architecture.

  2. Demonstrate a critical appreciation of the role of technical and technological frameworks in supporting the implementation of contemporary architectural ideas.

  3. Develop the intellectual content of a project through the use of appropriate technical and technological investigations.

  4. Research and interpret constructional, climatic and structural systems, and be able to demonstrate an innovative or experimental use of these through an architectural project.

Requirements

To join this postgraduate micro-credential, you will ideally have as a minimum:

  • An Architecture/Engineering Bachelor’s Degree or related equivalent qualification with a proficiency in the English language.
  • An interest in becoming climate literate, uncovering new architecture solutions, and helping achieve net zero buildings with Universal Access.

Fees and Costs

The fee for this micro-credential is €500

Micro-credential Learner Fee Subsidy (80% Funding)
There are a limited number of places available on this programme funded by the HIgher Education Authority (HEA).

  • Apply directly to the programme as a fee-paying applicant
Please note that applicants who have already applied via the direct (fee-paying) route are not eligible to subsequently apply for funding.
If your application for funding is not approved, you may have the option to apply as a fee-paying applicant, subject to availability of places.
