Qualcomm Recognition Awards 2026
In 2026, three鈥痑cademics from the鈥疭chool of Engineering鈥痑nd鈥疉rchitecture, 福利1000在线 College Cork (UCC)鈥痑re being鈥痟onoured鈥痺ith鈥痯restigious鈥淨ualcomm Faculty recognition awards鈥.
The鈥痑ward鈥痳ecognises鈥痷niversity academics for their remarkable contributions to advancing research and fostering innovation in key technology areas.鈥疎ach award comes with a philanthropic gift to support the鈥痑cademic鈥檚鈥痶eaching, learning and research initiatives.鈥

QT Technologies Ireland Limited (Qualcomm Ireland) and UCC have a long 鈥痶rack record鈥痮f collaboration,鈥痳esulting in innovative new technologies鈥痑nd solutions, pushing鈥痶he boundaries of what鈥痠s鈥痯ossible.鈥

The 2026 UCC Academics being鈥痟onored鈥痺ith Qualcomm Faculty Recognition Awards include:鈥
- Dr Kevin McCarthy,鈥疞ecturer at the School of Engineering and Architecture, UCC鈥
- Professor Dimitra鈥疨sychogiou,鈥疨rofessor of Microwave Communications at UCC, SFI Research Professor, and Head of the Advanced RF Technology Group at Tyndall National Institute鈥
- Dr鈥疌olin Murphy,鈥疞ecturer at the School of Engineering and Architecture, UCC.鈥
Qualcomm鈥@1000在线 Relations 鈥痠nvest鈥痠n university research projects conducted by faculty and students at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels to drive innovation for a better future.鈥
Dr. Kevin鈥疢cCarthy鈥痟as been a Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UCC since 2000. He previously held senior research roles at the National Microelectronics Research Centre (now Tyndall National Institute) and worked in product and CAD engineering at Analog Devices. His research spans semiconductor device modelling, design for manufacturability, and analogue and RF circuit design, resulting in over 100 peer reviewed publications.
He has served on technical鈥痯rogramme鈥痗ommittees for several IEEE conferences. Dr McCarthy teaches widely in electrical engineering, with a recent focus on analogue and RF design, and is actively engaged in Learning and Teaching innovation. He hopes the Qualcomm award will allow him鈥痶o explore鈥痬ore innovations in the Learning and Teaching area.鈥
笔谤辞蹿.鈥疍颈尘颈迟谤补鈥疨蝉测肠丑辞驳颈辞耻鈥檚鈥research focus is鈥疢icrowave Communications at UCC鈥痑nd Head of the Advanced RF Technology Group at Tyndall National Institute. She was the first woman to secure a highly competitive 鈥淪FI Research Professorship鈥.鈥
She鈥痟olds鈥痑鈥疨hD in Electrical Engineering from ETH Zurich鈥痑nd鈥疍ipl.-Eng. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the 福利1000在线 of Patras, Greece. Her鈥 world-leading excellent 鈥痳esearch focuses on reconfigurable microwave and鈥 millimetre鈥憌ave RF systems, including filters, frequency鈥慳gile antennas, and advanced additive manufacturing for antenna subsystems.
Prof.鈥疨sychogiou鈥痟as published over 300 papers and is the recipient of 鈥痭umerous 鈥痠nternational honours,鈥痠ncluding the 2023 IEEE MTT鈥慡 Outstanding Young Engineer Award and the 2020 NSF CAREER Award. She currently serves as President of All鈥慖reland URSI and holds senior editorial and leadership roles across IEEE committees and journals.鈥
Dr. Colin Murphy鈥痠s Director of the First Year Engineering鈥痯rogramme鈥痑t UCC鈥痑nd teaches Engineering Mechanics and Digital Communications.鈥疌olin鈥檚 current research鈥痜ocus in鈥痮n how generative AI can be鈥痩everaged鈥痶o enhance his teaching and research workflows, while actively engaging in collaborative research through the platform enablement鈥痯rogramme.鈥疕e鈥痟as鈥痑ctively鈥痟elped鈥痜acilitate鈥痶he鈥痚stablishment of the鈥痑ward-winning,鈥疩ualcomm supported鈥痬odule鈥業ntroduction to Electrical & Electronic Engineering鈥.鈥疌olin co-supervised two PhD students in collaboration鈥痺ith Dr.鈥 Andriy鈥疶emko鈥(Director, Engineering, Qualcomm Ireland &鈥疉djunct Professor of Machine Learning) and鈥疨rof.鈥疎manuel Popovici鈥(Qualcomm Chair and Director of Embedded Systems Group鈥疈UCC)鈥痑nd co-authored six papers on cybersecurity for the Internet of Things.鈥
