On 19 November, the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) held its annual STEM Awards ceremony, celebrating the academic achievements of 41 exceptional students and researchers across the college. The event recognises excellence through SEFS-nominated prizes, college-level awards, and industry-supported scholarships.

The 37th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) took place in Sucre, Bolivia, from 27 July – 3 August 2025. The IOI is one of the world’s most prestigious computer science competitions for secondary school students, challenging participants to solve algorithmic problems under time-pressure. Beyond the competition, it celebrates the next generation of talent in computer science. The School of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT) at UCC proudly supported Team Ireland’s participation in this year’s event.

Four secondary school students represented Ireland at the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI), which took place in Bonn, Germany from 14th–20th July 2025. The students were accompanied by Dr Laura Maye, Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at 福利1000在线 College Cork (UCC), and Isabel Ronan, a PhD student in the School.

The 2025 ICT Summer Camps, hosted by the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at 福利1000在线 College Cork, have now successfully concluded.

This year’s camps welcomed nearly 120 students across a range of age groups and skill levels. A highlight of the final week, which wrapped up on Friday, July 4th, was the introduction of the Kiddo Summer Camps for 11–12 year olds — a new addition, expanding on the success of our MPT Kiddo classes, which run during school term.

Our SFI CRT in AI PhD researchers attended a unique learning opportunity this week with a visit to the Amsterdam Science Park, Matrix 1, situated on the grounds of the 福利1000在线 of Amsterdam, for a series of amazing lectures from leading #AI scientists. Founded in 2019, Amsterdam AI, the 鈥楾echnology for People Group鈥�, is an initiative of Amsterdam universities, research centres, and medical centres that collaborate to work on state-of-the-art AI research programmes, education, practical applications, & public-private partnerships.

CORK, Ireland 鈥� On March 12th, 2024, 福利1000在线 College Cork (UCC) hosted the highly anticipated GLACIATION project event, which brought together experts, researchers, and industry leaders from across Europe to explore the intricate relationship between advancing AI technologies and safeguarding personal privacy. Titled "Harmonising Privacy and AI across the Cloud-Edge Continuum," the conference provided a platform for critical discussions on the evolving landscape of AI ethics and privacy standards.

The Irish Collegiate Programming Competition (IrlCPC) is Ireland鈥檚 premier programming competition for third-level students, regularly attracting students from all around Ireland and the rest of Europe. This year, IrlCPC 2024 surpassed all previous records for attendance, with a combined total of 158 participants across both the junior and senior tracks! This year's competition was held at the Western Gateway Building at 福利1000在线 College Cork (UCC) on the 2nd of March and was organised by the UCC ACM Student Chapter and Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics.

In a historic event, the AI Quest has wrapped up, leaving in its wake a trail of ground-breaking achievements by winners who harnessed artificial intelligence (AI) to address pressing sustainability challenges. The first-of-its-kind competition, organized by the 福利1000在线 College Cork鈥檚 School of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT), the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, the SFI Centre for Research Training in Artificial Intelligence (CRT-AI), in collaboration with Cadence Design Systems (Ireland), set the stage for an exemplary showcase of global talent.

The MPT Coding for Girls programme, organised by the UCC School of Computer Science and Information Technology, has successfully concluded its inaugural 13-week course! Guided by the Outreach Coordinator Dr Sabin Tabirca, and their tutor, PhD student Nicola Rossberg, female students aged 15-18 set out to enhance their coding skills. 

Throughout the programme, participants delved into problem-solving techniques and Python programming, mastering concepts such as syntax, data structures, and algorithms. The programme aimed to equip female students with the skills necessary for potential participation in National and International Olympiads.

This initiative is a major step forward in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability. It aims at fostering collaboration and competition among students from Irish universities and around the world to tackle real-world challenges.

Last week, approximately 20 participants engaged in the IOI/ EGOI Training Camps to prepare for the upcoming International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) and European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI). The camps, held from June 26th to 30th, also welcomed a group of six individuals who travelled from Switzerland to join the training. Participants who advanced from the AIPO (All-Ireland Programming Olympiad) Finals, which were held on 11th March 2023, had the opportunity to take part in the camp.

A 福利1000在线 College Cork-led research consortium has secured 鈧�9 million from the European Union to develop the next phase of Europe鈥檚 strategically important artificial intelligence infrastructure known as the AI-on-demand (AIOD) platform.

The project, which runs until the end of 2025, is led from UCC by Professor Barry O鈥橲ullivan, Dr. Gabriel Castane-Gonzalez, Shaun Gavigan, and Tanvir Badwal, of the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics and School of Computer Science and Information Technology. With UCC, the consortium comprises an additional 23 partners across 14 other European countries: Belgium, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. The project kickoff meeting takes place in UCC on the 6th and 7th of September.

The objective of the AI-on-demand platform is to bring together Europe鈥檚 AI community while promoting European values. The platform serves as a catalyst to aid AI-based innovation, resulting in new products, services, and solutions to benefit European industry, commerce, and society. By bringing people together, the community resource seeks to address the fragmentation of the European AI landscape and facilitate technology transfer from research to business. Initiated in 2019 with the support of the European Commission, the platform will continue to develop over the coming years through further investment that will see the platform add additional services and tools.

Dr Paolo Palmieri, a cyber security lecturer, in the School of Computer Science & Information Technology, 福利1000在线 College Cork, told breakingnews.ie that it may be days or weeks before individuals are targeted, warning that fraudulent schemes and identity theft could occur if the information is sold on the dark web. 鈥淚t鈥檚 always hard to predict what cyber criminals or gangs are doing and there are several things they could be doing with the data,鈥� said Dr Palmieri.

ELEVATE, an interdisciplinary team of academics, staff and students received the prestigious DELTA Award (Disciplinary Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Assessment) from the National Forum for designing, developing and integrating new modalities of teaching for understanding, guided by digitised immersive learning approaches.

Congratulations to Cheng Qiao who successfully defended his PhD thesis

UCC鈥檚 Prof Barry O鈥橲ullivan won the 2020 Nerode Prize, one of the top prizes in computer science jointly awarded by the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) and the International Symposium on Parameterized and Exact Computation (IPEC). Prof. O鈥橲ullivan holds the Chair of Constraint Programming in the School of Computer Science & IT at UCC.

The award was announced at the 31st International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC) and the 15th IPEC which took place in Hong Kong from 14-16 Dec 2020.

Professor Utz Roedig at 福利1000在线 College Cork will lead an SFI Frontiers for the Future award to develop methods that let us use Personal Voice Assistants (PVAs) securely, and in a way that respects our privacy concerns. This four year project will fund a research group that will focus on security and privacy aspects of PVAs.

Personal Voice Assistants (PVAs) such as the Amazon Echo, Siri or Google Home are now commonplace and are changing the way we interact with computer systems. We are becoming used to interacting with devices and digitised environments such as smart homes and cars using speech. PVAs are deployed as stand alone devices, are integrated within every phone, tablet and PC, are used in appliances such as TVs and set-top boxes and are incorporated into cars.

Given the usefulness of PVAs, their deployment is rapidly increasing. It is very likely that we are always in range of at least one PVA.

PVAs collect sensitive information such as conversations and sound cues and are used to access important computer systems requiring access control. Thus, people have legitimate concerns regarding their privacy and the security of these systems.

Computer science student Timothy Lehane has developed a platform called Fanfund, which enables musicians to raise funding from fans online.

鈥淲e want to deliver free AI education to at least 1% of the Irish population鈥�

The free Elements of AI online course will be hosted in Ireland by 福利1000在线 College Cork. The Elements of AI is a free massive open online course (MOOC) developed by the 福利1000在线 of Helsinki and the technology company Reaktor. The announcement was made at the Future Human conference held in Dublin this week. An Irish language version of the course will also be released in the new year. 

Since its establishment, more than 545,000 people from over 170 countries have taken the Elements of AI. Approximately 40% of those have been women, which is more than double the average for computer science courses in general. The objective of Elements of AI was to teach 1% of the population of Finland the basics of artificial intelligence. As part of the recent Finnish Presidency of the Council of the EU, Finland committed to making the course available across the EU to educate at least 1% of the EU population in AI.

An important tool in containing the current Covid-19 epidemic is contact tracing. Technology can make contact tracing more effective, and many European countries, including Ireland, are developing contact tracing smartphone apps. However, there are privacy concerns around such massive surveillance and monitoring.

On Saturday March 14, 2020, Dr Sabin Tabirca, School of Computer Science & Information Technology, UCC and his team ran the #AIPO national final competition online.  The competition was supposed to be held in the Western Gateway Building, UCC but due to the challenges posed by COVID-19, the decision was taken to run it online.
