Course overview

English for Work and Life (General English)/Academic English courses help you, using an individual learning plan, to develop the English language skills needed to live and/or work in an English-speaking environment and follow your chosen career.   Interactive and communicative classes with specialised tutors focus on improving both fluency and accuracy while integrating the practice of speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as grammar and vocabulary.
 
Language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) and systems (discourse, functions, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary) are taught using a combination of published materials and supplementary resources. Significant classroom time is dedicated to communicative practice and development of skills based on the students鈥� specific needs. Materials are specially designed and selected to suit the topic of each lesson and include authentic materials which highlight the unique cultural setting of UCC Language Centre. UCC's Connected Curriculum is integrated into these lessons and covers such diverse areas as employability, sustainability, civic engagement and global reach.

Who is this course for?

Full-time courses in General English are for all levels from Elementary (A2) to Proficiency (C2).  The General English courses aim at developing students' overall ability to communicate confidently in English.  Students also prepare for international exams such as IELTS and Cambridge English.

Helping students develop their English speaking, listening, reading, writing and communication skills in a practical and focused manner to achieve their English language targets.

You may use a laptop or suitable tablet to assist your learning and for best access to shared course materials. If you are not able to bring a device, your teachers will assist you with class materials.  Please note that a smartphone is   not considered to be a suitable device for study purposes. If using a device, you should download   Microsoft Teams before starting your course for full access to learning content.

No additional registration fee

Please note the fees for your exam are not included in the course fees. You will have to register for and pay for the exam independently and provide proof of your registration, showing the scheduled date of your exam, to the Language Centre.  For example, this can be an official receipt or an email confirmation from the exam centre. 
A copy of your exam result has to be submitted to the Language Centre before end of your programme to satisfy immigration rules.  

*Students can choose to sign up FREE OF CHARGE for an additional 2 lessons weekly (Communicative Skills).
