Caoimhlin Duggan represented her school at this year's Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition with guidance from teachers at St. Brogan's, Michael Connern and Sara Hurley, and Mary-Jane Lynch, Technical Officer in the School of Microbiology at ¸£Àû1000ÔÚÏß College Cork, in an exciting project on the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. 

An event marking International Day of Women and Girls in Science was held in the Aula Maxima.

Third-year Microbiology student Niamh Horgan has been awarded a highly competitive Microbiology Society Vacation Studentship, which supports undergraduate researchers across the UK and Ireland.

This summer, third-year microbiology student Conor Dennehy took part in the Undergraduate Research Experience in Microbiology Programme at the School of Microbiology. 

This summer, the School of Microbiology welcomed seven undergraduate students as part of its Undergraduate Research Experience in Microbiology Programme.

Breda Murphy has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to social impact in supply chain management through the prestigious David Latten Social Impact Award, funded by Logitech.

On a balmy afternoon, the eve of midsummer, there was a joyful atmosphere in the President's garden at the conferring of Amy Kate O'Mahony, Sai Ravi Chandra Nori and Fatma Koç as their families, friends and supervisors gathered to celebrate their success.

Established in 2013, the Musgrave Award is presented annually to the highest-scoring graduate of the MSc Food Microbiology course. It reflects a decade-long commitment to recognising future leaders in food microbiology and strengthening industry-academic collaboration.

Subterranean Boole 4 set the scene for the School of Microbiology’s Annual Research day organised by Dr Pauline Scanlan. This is one of the highlights of the school’s calendar with 19 postgraduate students presenting their work this year.

Three School of Microbiology students win 2nd place at the Student Research Conference

Dr Rajauria has recently been selected as Lead Author by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for their Methodology Report on Short-Lived Climate Forcers (SLCFs). The IPCC is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.

The annual presentation of 3rd year posters, a culmination of lab-based module MB3016 Methods in Microbiology, took place in the North Wing Council room. 

A large gathering of students and staff from the School of Microbiology were in attendance and yet again, there was an exceptionally high standard of entrants this year. The winning group whose poster is entitled: 'From Soil to Solution: Discovering New Antibiotics' comprised Megan Martin, Kate Murphy and Chloe Clifford Looney and were presented their prize by Head of School, Dr David Clarke.

Ms Carmel Shortiss is the main organiser of this event, supported by Dr John O'Callaghan and team. The work on display showcased the exemplary teaching, research and dedication of the School of Microbiology inspiring students to become inquisitive scientists of the future.

Their work to improve the quality and safety of fermented beverages through the management and control of spoilage microorganisms has been awarded €572,976 as part of the European Union's climate objectives and targets.

This event is a highlight in the school’s calendar and the Council Room, gallery-esque in its setting, was a fitting backdrop to the fine work on display.

School of Microbiology Professor inducted into the prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization. 

Four School of Microbiology students were conferred at the Summer Conferring Ceremonies, ¸£Àû1000ÔÚÏß College Cork, on 23 June 2023.

Fourth year BSc Microbiology student at the School of Microbiology, UCC, Ayomide Ajani is the 2023 winner of the Mary Mulvihill Award, a science media competition for third-level students that honours the memory of science journalist and author Mary Mulvihill.

This event was organised by the School’s Graduate Studies Committee in partnership with the Postgraduate Committee and The Micro.SCRUM Research Forum.

Three generations of the O’Mullane family were delighted to gather in the School of Microbiology to formally launch and present the Professor Tadhg O’Mullane Award for Academic Excellence to Conor O’Callaghan for academic year 2020/21 and Tessa Kelly for academic year 2021/22.

Spring conferrings were particularly special for three students who graduated with Joint Doctorates in Microbial Biotechnology from UCC and a European partner university.

BSc Microbiology third year students presented their project results as part of their lab-based Module MB3016 Methods in Microbiology. Coordinated and curated by Carmel Shortiss, the Poster Session held in the UCC Council Room on the North Wing of the Main Quad drew a large crowd from staff and students.

Presentation of the Undergraduate Prizes in Microbiology for academic year 2021-22

Dr F. Jerry Reen’s research lab in the School of Microbiology, BioSciences Institute has recently been presented with the Bronze LEAF Award for their efforts in developing sustainable practices within the lab environment.

The Musgrave Award for Excellence in Food Microbiology was presented to Ruben O’Hea by Lucy O’Connor in UCC recently. Launched in 2015, the annual Award is presented to the highest performing student in the Masters in Food Microbiology Programme which is delivered through the School of Microbiology UCC.  

Congratulations to Conor O'Callaghan on receiving the inaugural Professor Tadhg O'Mullane Award for Academic Excellence 2020/21.
