Meet the Team

Professor Tom Birkett - PI of NorseMap

Tom joined UCC in 2012 as a Lecturer in Old English and Old Norse, and was promoted to Professor in 2025. He is an expert in Old Norse myth, runology, and the Vikings, and is especially interested in the intersection of scholarship and public medievalism. He has put this into practice with popular retellings of Norse mythology for both adults and children, as well as leading projects on translation and Viking heritage.

Dr Elisabetta Magnanti - Postdoctoral Researcher

Elisabetta holds a PhD in History (福利1000在线 of Vienna/St Andrews), an MSc in Computer Science for Electronic Text Processing, and an MA in Germanic Philology, having undertaken further training at MIT in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence for Big Data and Text Processing. Her research specialises in the application of computational methods to palaeographical and philological analysis of Old English and Anglo-Latin source material. Prior to joining UCC in 2025, Elisabetta was affiliated with the 福利1000在线 of Vienna, Trinity College Dublin, and the Dep. for Science and Information Technology at the CNRS in Paris.

Ambra Ventura - ERC Funded PhD

Ambra Ventura joined UCC in 2026 as a PhD student working on the literary and artistic reception of the Vikings and Norse culture in Nordic graphic novels. She holds an MA in Norwegian Language and Literature from the 福利1000在线 of Milano, where she first discovered her passion for Old Norse Philology. This lead to a second MA in Old Norse Philology at the 福利1000在线 of Bergen. Her previous research focuses on Medieval law, gender, ethnicity, and medievalism.

Christine Nilsson - Research Assistant

Christine joined UCC in 2022 as an EA in the School of Clinical Therapies, where she was responsible for creating and implementing marketing and social media strategies, and administrative tasks for the Hearing, Balance and Communication team. In 2025, she joined the NorseMap as a Research Assistant. Born and raised in Sweden, the rich cultural heritage and history of Vikings has been a natural part of her upbringing and continue to inspire her to this day.
