Mining Memories: New Explorations in Cinema, Memory and the Past
Jean-Luc Godard once observed of Bertrand Tavernier that they shared a common origin: as children of 鈥渢he Lib茅ration and the Cin茅math猫que鈥 they came of age in the turbulent 1960s (qtd. in A Journey Through French Cinema (Voyage 脿 travers le cin茅ma fran莽ais,Bertrand Tavernier, 2016)). Tavernier, who died in March of this year, is an appropriate filmmaker to commemorate in this Introduction to an issue of Alphaville dedicated to themes of memory and the past. In a career spanning seven decades, he produced work that investigated, appraised and revealed the role that the past鈥攁nd what gets remembered and what gets forgotten鈥攑lays in the shaping of individual identity and collective culture.

Presented by LUX Critical Forum Cork & Cork Film Centre, Aisling O Connell will stage a week-long occupation of the Crypt at St. Lukes Hall. She will inhabit the space alongside The Films of Reason, her latest body of work. This will be able to be viewed online.
The Films of Reason exist in paint, film and performance. During the occupation, the artist will put herself and the work 鈥榦n trial鈥. In the absence of live spectators, the work will be the only audience and the camera the only witness. The exhibition will be immediate and shifting, subjected to various live processes. Ultimately, The Films of Reason will be pushed over the boundaries of exhibition, and this process will result in three new film works, episodes, that will be released online as they are completed.
